MUME: Multiple Selves
MUME's 17th edition

MUME (Museo Mexicano / Mexican Museum) is a nomadic anti-museum created by Oscar Cueto, aiming to provoke new narratives in the context of evolving geopolitical changes and global migration. It invites international cultural workers to present collaborative projects in Austria. For this occasion, creator Elisa Andessner (AT), driven by an interest in feminism and gender roles, has invited the artists Polina Porras (MX/RU) and Angel Alado (MX) to develop works on these topics.

While concepts such as center-periphery and self-other have aided in understanding postcolonial global political organization, the 17th edition of MUME has chosen to reflect on a world characterized by relative centers, disrupted binaries, mobile diasporas, and "multiple selves" — Argentine philosopher María Lugones suggests that this is where the patriarchal/colonial system faces its greatest resistance. Perhaps, in a poetic twist of fate, the future of gender equality and new social organization lies with those who have chosen or have been compelled to embody multiple "selves," challenging traditional notions of sexuality or family, speaking several languages, and inhabiting diverse worlds simultaneously due to forced migrations and exclusions based on gender, ethnicity, or social and geographical conditions.

This special edition presents a retrospective of the 16 previous issues of the Nomadic Museum through documentation and works from its collection created by Alpine Gothic, Álvaro Verduzco, Andrea Torreblanca, Ausländer, Camila Rhomberg, Carla Rippey, Carlos Palacios, Doris Steinbichler, Enrique Rashide, Frida Robles, Juanjosé Rivas, Juan Pablo Macías, Mai Ling, Manuela Picallo Gil, María Cerdá, Marissa Raygosa, Marko Dinić, Melquiades Herrera and RRD.
